Can I run my generator indoors, in a garage, or near openings during a storm?
NO. Under no circumstances should your FIRMAN generator be operated indoors, inside a garage, in any partially enclosed space (including sheds or crawlspaces), or even near doors, windows, or ventilation openings. Doing so poses a serious risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning — a colorless, odorless, and deadly gas. Portable generators must always be used outdoors, well away from occupied areas.
Safe Placement Tips:
- Location: Position your generator at least 20 feet (6 meters) away from your home, doors, windows, vents, and neighboring buildings.
- Wind Direction: Always place the generator downwind of occupied spaces and point the exhaust away from your home, people, and pets.
- Surface Conditions: Operate the generator on a flat, dry surface. Avoid areas where water can pool or come into contact with the generator to eliminate shock or electrocution hazards. If the ground is wet, elevate the generator or use a protective stable platform.
- Extension Cords: Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords long enough to reach your appliance or transfer switch location—this allows the generator to be placed at a safe distance. Ensure the cords are free of damage and fully insulated.
- Know the Signs: Watch for symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure — such as headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, or shortness of breath. If any of these occur, turn off the generator, move to fresh air, and seek medical attention immediately
